Judith Rosemary Locke Chalmers was born on 10 October 1935 in Gatley, Cheshire. She began broadcasting for the BBC at the age of 13, later presenting programmes such as Family Favourites, Woman’s Hour and Come Dancing during the 1960s. In 1974 she became the face of ITV’s holiday series Wish You Were Here?, a role she kept until 2003, making her one of the most recognised travel presenters in the UK. She also hosted Miss World contests, appeared on various chat shows and worked on radio, including a mid‑morning slot on BBC Radio 2. Chalmers was appointed an OBE in 1994 and was married to sports commentator Neil Durden‑Smith, with whom she had two children, including presenter Mark Durden‑Smith. After a battle with Alzheimer’s disease, she died peacefully at home on 21 May 2026, aged 90, surrounded by her family.
