Joshua Daniel Mauro was born on February 17, 1991, in England and moved to Texas at age three. He excelled at high school football in Dallas before playing collegiately at Stanford University, where he earned All‑Pac‑12 honors.

Mauro entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2014, signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers before joining the Arizona Cardinals, where he became a regular starter and recorded a career‑high 42 tackles in 2016. He later played for the New York Giants, Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, and Jacksonville Jaguars, and returned to the Cardinals for a second stint, contributing both on the defensive line and on special teams.
