Particulars

Josep Maria Trias de Bes was a Catalan jurist and politician whose career spanned several Spanish parties. In his youth he was active in the PSUC and took part in the 1966 Caputxinada, when the Sindicat Democràtic d'Estudiants de la Universitat de Barcelona (SDEUB) was constituted. He began his political life as communications officer for Convergència Socialista de Catalunya (CSC) and from 1976 was a member of the executive committee and national council of Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (CDC).

He was elected to the Spanish Congress as a CiU deputy for Barcelona in the 1982, 1986 and 1989 elections, serving as fourth secretary of the chamber (1982-1989) and fourth vice president (1989-1993). In 1995 he broke with CiU and joined the Catalan PP, winning a seat for the Popular Party in the 1996 elections.

After leaving electoral politics, Trias de Bes sat on the board of RTVE between 1996 and 2004 and chaired the shipping company Transmediterránea until 1999. He died in early September 2026 at the age of 81.
