Particulars
Jon Small was an American drummer, music video director, and concert film producer best known for his early musical partnership with Billy Joel and his later career directing music videos and concert films. In the 1960s he was the drummer for the Long Island rock group the Hassles, alongside organist Billy Joel, and in 1969 the two left to form the heavy rock duo Attila, releasing a single eponymous album in 1970 before the partnership dissolved amid Joel's affair with Small's wife, Elizabeth.
Small went on to build a successful career as a director and producer of music videos and concert films. He directed videos for artists including Run DMC, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, and Travis Tritt, and directed and produced several of Billy Joel's major concert releases, including Live from Long Island, Live at Yankee Stadium, and the 2010 documentary The Last Play at Shea, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and aired on PBS.
Despite the personal rift with Joel in the early 1970s, the two reconciled and collaborated professionally for decades, with Small's work helping to capture some of the most celebrated live performances in American rock music.
