John Douglas was born in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland. He joined the Trashcan Sinatras in 1986, shortly after the band's formation, and became a core member alongside his brother Stephen Douglas, Francis Reader, Paul Livingston and Davy Hughes. Over a career spanning four decades, he performed on seven of the group's albums, including their breakthrough debut Cake, which produced the hit single "Obscurity Knocks" and spent three months on the Billboard 200.

The band achieved international recognition with tours across the United Kingdom, North America and Japan, and their music was noted for its melodic guitar pop and witty lyrics. Douglas contributed both guitar work and vocals, earning a reputation among fans as the "heart of TCS". After a period of reduced activity in the late 1990s, the group returned with new releases, most recently the album Ever the Optimist in 2026.

John Douglas died peacefully on 3 August 2026 at the age of 63, surrounded by family and friends. His death was announced by the band and prompted tributes from fans and fellow musicians who remembered him as a talented guitarist, a warm personality, and a key figure in the Scottish indie music scene.
