Historical departure

Particulars

On 8 June 1954 Johannes O. was sentenced to life in prison. In Leeuwarden prison he met Arie Lodder, also convicted of killing his wife, and they agreed to write notes confessing to each other's murders for use after one died.

In February 1958 Arie Lodder was found dead in his cell next to Johannes O.'s, poisoned with prussic acid; a note on his body said he had taken medicine given by Johannes O. Both Johannes O. and the prison director later received a letter from Lodder claiming Lodder had killed Mrs. Opden.
