Johannes Kunze
1903–1943Kunze was exposed as a spy after a note was mishandled and was later beaten to death by fellow prisoners.
Particulars
Kunze regularly passed notes to the American doctor during sick call that contained information about POW activities, including loyal Nazis. When a new American doctor, who did not know Kunze was a spy and could not speak German, received a note, he returned it through another POW; that POW read the note and identified Kunze as a spy.
After the discovery spread, Kunze was tried by a kangaroo court and subsequently beaten to death by a mob of at least twenty prisoners. He was buried in the Fort Reno prisoner of war cemetery.
