Historical departure

Particulars

Jóhannes Jósefsson, known as Jóhannes á Borg, was an Icelandic Glíma champion who took his wrestling skills around the world. After placing fourth in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1908 London Olympics, he traveled to America and joined Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, where he performed as an unarmed contender, taking on opponents who were even armed with knives. His circus career made him wealthy, and he returned to Iceland in 1927.

Back in Iceland, Jóhannes invested over 1 million krónur in the Hotel Borg, which became the country's classiest hotel for many years. He managed the hotel until his retirement in 1960. In 1908, he also wrote an English-language book titled 'Icelandic Wrestling' to promote the sport. He died in Reykjavík in 1968 at the age of 85.
