Particulars
Rao Joginder Singh, recorded as Joginder Singh Rao throughout his career, became the only cricketer to take a hat-trick in each of his first two first-class matches. On debut for Services in the 1963–64 Ranji Trophy, he dismissed three Jammu and Kashmir batsmen as they were bowled out for just 47. Less than a week later, against Northern Punjab, he claimed two hat-tricks in the second innings, dismissing Suresh Sharma, Ashok Khanna, Bhupinder Singh, Rajinder Kale, Ramnath Paul, and Bishen Singh Bedi. That feat placed him alongside Albert Trott as one of only two men to take two hat-tricks in a single innings, and his three hat-tricks in the season equalled Charlie Parker's world record, a mark later matched by Dean Headley in 1996.
Born in Gurgaon, Punjab, on 16 October 1938, Rao played only five first-class games in total, all for Services, taking 21 wickets at an average of 9.66 with best bowling of 7/30. His career was cut short shortly after his remarkable start when he was injured in a parachuting accident while serving as a captain in the army. He then took up golf and represented India in France and Pakistan, and redesigned the Army golf course in the Delhi Cantonment and the Dehra Dun golf course.
Rao served in the India-Pakistan wars in 1965 and 1971, reaching the rank of Major-General in the Indian Army. He married Nandita Rao, with whom he had two sons, Probir and Rahul. He died in India on 3 October 1994, thirteen days short of his 56th birthday.
