Joanna Pettet was born Joanna Jane Salmon on November 16, 1942, in London, England. Her father, a British Royal Air Force pilot, died during World War II, and her mother later remarried, settling in Montreal where Joanna was adopted by her stepfather and took the surname Pettet. At 16, she moved to New York City and studied acting with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre and at the Lincoln Center.
Pettet made her Broadway debut at 19 in "Take Her, She's Mine" and went on to appear in several other Broadway productions. Her film career began in 1966 with a role in "The Group," which led to further film roles in "The Night of the Generals" and the James Bond spoof "Casino Royale," where she played Mata Bond. She also starred in "Robbery" directed by Peter Yates.
In the 1970s, Pettet transitioned more into television, starring in TV movies and series such as "Knots Landing" and making guest appearances on popular shows of the time. She continued to work steadily in television throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including roles on "Murder, She Wrote" and "The Love Boat."
Pettet was known for her friendship with actor Alan Bates, who bequeathed her a significant sum upon his death. In 2021, she was involved in a hiking accident that required surgery. Joanna Pettet died on July 7, 2026, at the age of 83.
