Joan Pujol García

1914–1988

Joan Pujol García invented a spy network that grew to 27 fictitious agents funded by the Germans.

Historical departure

Particulars

Joan Pujol García invented sub-agents who could take the blame for false information and mistakes. The Allies finally accepted him after the Germans spent considerable resources hunting a convoy that did not exist.

Pujol moved to Britain and received the code name “Garbo.” With his handler Tomás Harris, he expanded the fictitious network until the Germans were funding 27 agents, none of whom existed.
