No plate on record.
Jerry T. Bunyard was a California inmate who spent over 45 years on death row for the 1979 murder of his pregnant wife.
Particulars
Jerry T. Bunyard was convicted of first-degree murder for the 1979 killing of his wife, Elaine Bunyard, and her unborn child in San Joaquin County, California. Elaine was found dead in their garage from a shotgun blast to the head, orchestrated by Bunyard who had hired his childhood friend, Erwin Popham, to carry out the crime. Bunyard's motive stemmed from his belief that Elaine had become pregnant by another man and his desire to end their marriage to be with his new girlfriend. He offered her a $50,000 divorce settlement, which she refused. The murder was planned to look like a suicide but was ultimately staged as a robbery after the violent attack. Popham struck Elaine repeatedly with frying pans before shooting her, abandoning the suicide narrative due to the brutality of the scene. Bunyard was sentenced to death and spent more than 45 years on death row before dying at age 76 at California State Prison, Sacramento. At the time of his death, California had a moratorium on the death penalty, though Bunyard remained under sentence of death. His case highlighted long-standing issues in the criminal justice system, particularly regarding prolonged incarceration on death row.
