Particulars
Jeremy Jack Thomas was a British independent film producer who founded the Recorded Picture Company and later Hanway Films. Over a career spanning more than half a century he helped bring more than eighty features to the screen, earning a reputation as one of the industry's most respected independent producers. His crowning achievement was producing Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987), which won him the 1988 Academy Award for Best Picture, and in 2006 he received a European Film Award for Outstanding European Achievement in World Cinema.
Born into a celebrated filmmaking family, with his father Ralph Thomas directing many of the Doctor films and his uncle Gerald Thomas directing the Carry On series, Thomas championed ambitious, often international projects that gave leading directors creative freedom. His body of work established him as a key figure in prestige and art-house cinema, and he remained active and influential in the industry into his later years.
