Jean-Pierre Dorléac was born on 12 April 1943 in Toulon, France. He began his career in the United States film industry in 1977 and quickly became known for his elaborate and historically accurate costume work across film, television, theatre, opera and burlesque. His designs were featured in a wide range of productions, from the period romance "Somewhere in Time" (1980) to popular movies such as "The Blue Lagoon" and "Heart and Souls".

Dorléac received an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design for "Somewhere in Time" and was nominated for eleven Emmy Awards, winning twice for his work on the television series "Battlestar Galactica" (1978) and "The Lot" (1999‑2001). He also earned multiple Emmy nominations for his contributions to series like "Quantum Leap" and "The Bastard". His costumes have been exhibited at institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Beyond his screen work, Dorléac authored books on Hollywood costume history and contributed to the preservation of costume design as an art form. His career spanned several decades, influencing the visual style of numerous productions worldwide until his death in 2026 at the age of 83.
