Jean Massillon
?–2026Haitian mayor of Kenscoff who defended his community against gang violence and repeatedly appealed to the government for protection.
Particulars
Jean Massillon served as mayor of Kenscoff, a farming community in the hills above Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He was widely known for his dedication to protecting his constituents as the area came under assault from violent gangs. He repeatedly called on the government to keep residents safe and used local radio to raise awareness of the community's struggles. Massillon died on 9 October 2026, with officials saying the death was health-related. His death came after Kenscoff was the site of two brutal massacres in July and August that left at least 164 people dead, and he had recently urged displaced residents to be patient while communities were secured. Haiti's government paid tribute to him, saying his death leaves a deep void within his family and the community he served with dedication.
