From August 2010 to November 2011, James Hart Stern shared a prison cell with Ku Klux Klan leader Edgar Ray Killen. During that time Killen hand wrote dozens of letters to Stern outlining his views on race and confessing to other crimes, and Killen signed over power of attorney and his Mississippi land to Stern.

James Hart Stern detailed the experience in the 2017 book Killen the KKK, co-authored with Autumn K. Robinson, and using the power of attorney Stern “disbanded” Killen’s incarnation of the KKK on January 5, 2016.
