Jalen Shaffer played high school football at NorthPointe Christian High School before earning a spot on the Wheaton College football team, where he was remembered by coaches and teammates for his unselfishness, humility, and talent on the field. After graduating, he devoted himself to mentoring urban middle‑school students through Bridge Street Ministries, where he was praised for his godly character and dedication to the next generation.

On June 13, 2026, Shaffer was pronounced dead after drowning in Lake Michigan. He had entered the water to try to save a teammate with whom he had played for four years at Wheaton, but both men succumbed despite rescue efforts. His death prompted heartfelt tributes from family, former coaches, and the community, highlighting the lasting impact he had made both on and off the field.
