Particulars
J. Todd Anderson was an American storyboard artist best known as a frequent collaborator with the Coen brothers, providing the detailed storyboards that shaped the look of films including Fargo, The Big Lebowski, The Nice Guys, Drive-Away Dolls, and The Tragedy of Macbeth. He described his craft as interpretive, translating the directors' shot-by-shot vision into drawings that guided actors, camera movement, and set design.
Anderson made his directorial debut in 1998 with The Naked Man, co-written with Ethan Coen, and later served as second unit director on the Coens' Intolerable Cruelty, which earned him membership in the Directors Guild of America. He also appeared on screen in Fargo as one of the witnesses killed by the kidnappers, credited with a playful symbol rather than his name, and his name was used as an alias for the outlaw Tom Chaney in True Grit.
Beyond film, Anderson wrote the words and music for the pop opera Nativity, first performed in Dayton, Ohio, in 1995, and co-produced the radio show Filmically Perfect. He died at age 67.
