Particulars

Hershel Parker was born on November 26, 1935, in Comanche, Oklahoma. Raised in a family of itinerant farmers, he initially dropped out of high school and worked as a railroad employee before pursuing higher education. He earned a bachelor's degree in English from Lamar University and went on to obtain master's and doctoral degrees in English from Northwestern University in 1960 and 1963, respectively. Parker dedicated much of his academic career to the study of Herman Melville, becoming one of the foremost authorities on the American novelist.

Parker taught English at several institutions, including the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern University, the University of Southern California, and from 1979 until his retirement in 1998, at the University of Delaware, where he held the title of H. Fletcher Brown Professor Emeritus. His scholarly contributions include a two-volume biography of Herman Melville, published in 1996 and 2002, which was lauded for its depth and meticulous research. The first volume was a finalist for the 1997 Pulitzer Prize in Biography. He also edited significant works related to Melville, such as the Norton Critical Edition of Moby-Dick and served as General Editor of the Northwestern-Newberry Edition of The Writings of Herman Melville.

In addition to his work on Melville, Parker was known for advocating traditional methods of literary research, emphasizing the importance of original materials and chronological analysis. He critiqued academic trends such as New Criticism and post-structuralism, which he believed neglected authorial intention. Beyond Melville studies, Parker contributed to the study of textual criticism and genealogy, publishing works that explored historical and racial themes in American history. He passed away on June 19, 2026, at his home in Morro Bay, California.
