Historical departure

Particulars

Herbertus Bikker was sentenced to death by a Dutch court after World War II, but his sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. He escaped from the prison in Breda on 26 December 1952 together with Klaas Carel Faber, Sander Borgers and four other convicted war criminals.

He crossed the border at Ubbergen near Cleves, settled in Hagen, Germany, and lived there undetected until 1995. Under a 1943 decree, foreign members of the Waffen‑SS automatically received German nationality, and Germany does not extradite its own nationals.
