1755–1819

A Swedish lieutenant claimed to channel the spirit of Duke Charles's dead mother, sending it to spy on King Gustav III and warning him with a prediction that damaged the royal brothers' relationship.

Historical departure

Particulars

Henrik Gustaf Ulfvenklou, a Swedish mystic and medium, claimed to communicate with the spirits of the dead and used that claim to gain significant influence in the court of Charles XIII of Sweden. In 1783, as a lieutenant, he arrived in Stockholm and found success in the esoteric circle around Duke Charles, who later became king. Ulfvenklou asserted that he was in contact with the spirit of the duke's deceased mother, Louisa Ulrika of Prussia, and he used this supposed connection to send the spirit to observe Charles's brother, King Gustav III, who was traveling in Italy in 1784.

Ulfvenklou sent a warning with a prediction to Gustav, an act that reportedly damaged the relationship between the two brothers. Gustaf Adolf Reuterholm, a powerful figure in the court, disliked Ulfvenklou and had him sent away. When Ulfvenklou returned in 1785, Reuterholm was said to have exposed him to Charles, ending his public career. Despite this setback, Ulfvenklou continued to exert influence over Charles through correspondence for years afterward.
