Helen Josephine Mansfield claimed that Richard Warren forced her to have intercourse with D. W. Perley, after which Warren popped out from under the bed, pointed a loaded pistol at Perley's head, and demanded $500.

She said Perley went to the bank after his escape and stopped payment of the check, and that, at Perley's instigation, San Francisco newspapers published details describing a conspiracy between the Lawlors and the Warrens.
