Historical departure

Particulars

On 21 June 1916 a German submersible docked in Cartagena and Heinrich Karl Fricke landed on the nearby beach of La Algameca. He carried a large sum of money in pesetas and documents identifying him as Henry Wood or Harry Wood, a U.S. citizen from Boston, but carabineros saw him and intercepted him after a brief chase.

Fricke unsuccessfully tried to bribe the Spanish security agents, who took him to the Cartagena Naval Base. The British consul interrogated him; his fluent English and simple demeanor did not remove suspicions, and the consul requested that he remain under surveillance at the naval base until the war ended.
