Particulars
Heiko Weber was a German footballer and coach closely associated with FC Carl Zeiss Jena. He joined the club from Thale in 1988 and was a fixture in the side for ten years, making 302 appearances. On 25 May 1991 he scored the goal that secured Jena's promotion to the 2. Bundesliga, a strike that proved to be the last goal ever scored in the DDR-Oberliga.
After his playing career Weber moved into coaching, leading Jena from the Oberliga to the 2. Bundesliga between 2004 and 2006. He later worked with the amateur side of Energie Cottbus, served as sporting director at FC Erzgebirge Aue, and spent five years at ZFC Meuselwitz, where he kept the small East Thuringian club in the fourth tier.
Weber announced his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in February 2026, prompting a fan-led fundraising campaign and a benefit match in June featuring former teammates. He died on 26 October 2026 at the age of 61.
