1971–2026
American professional basketball player who played in the WNBA for the Los Angeles Sparks and Washington Mystics and inspired the Disney film Double Teamed.
Particulars
Heidi Burge Horton was an American professional basketball player who, with her identical twin sister Heather Burge Quella, inspired the 2002 Disney Channel Original Movie Double Teamed. Born November 12, 1971, the sisters began their careers at Palos Verdes High School in California before both earning scholarships to the University of Virginia, where they helped lead the Lady Cavaliers to three Atlantic Coast Conference championships and three consecutive NCAA Final Four appearances. In 1991 the pair were recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's tallest female twins at 6 feet 5 inches.
After graduating, Horton played professionally overseas from 1993 to 1997 in France, Hungary, Italy and Greece. She joined the WNBA in 1997, playing one season with the Los Angeles Sparks before being selected by the Washington Mystics in the 1998 expansion draft, where she played her final WNBA game in August 1998. Following retirement she moved to Houston, working as a press and media intern for the Houston Comets, as a physical therapist specializing in lower back injuries, and as a private basketball coach.
Horton was diagnosed with grade four glioblastoma in October 2025. After treatment brought the cancer into temporary remission, it returned in July 2026, and she died on October 5, 2026, at the age of 54. Her alma mater, the University of Virginia, paid tribute to her as a cherished member of the Virginia Women's Basketball family.
