Harry Woolman was born and raised in rural Elkton, Maryland. As an aspiring motorcycle daredevil, he rode his cycle backwards or standing on his head at the town’s outskirts, where eloping couples stopped to ask for directions and he offered to guide them to a 24‑hour chapel for tips.
One of the couples was a Hollywood producer from New York City, who invited Woolman to look him up for a job if he ever traveled to California.
