Gregory Dale Hawthorne was an American professional football player who won Super Bowl XIV as a rookie with the Pittsburgh Steelers and later played for the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts.

Gregory Dale Hawthorne was born on September 5, 1956. He played college football for the Baylor Bears before being selected in the first round of the 1979 NFL Draft with the 28th overall pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers. As a rookie, Hawthorne contributed to the Steelers' Super Bowl XIV victory over the Los Angeles Rams. A versatile player, he lined up as a running back, tight end, and wide receiver during his career. After five seasons with the Steelers, during which he appeared in 59 games and recorded 522 rushing yards and 55 receptions for 710 yards, he joined the New England Patriots. In the 1985 AFC Championship game, Hawthorne made a pivotal play by recovering a fumble, helping the Patriots advance to Super Bowl XX. He later played one season with the Indianapolis Colts, finishing his nine-year NFL career having played in 105 games with 11 total touchdowns and 1,639 yards from scrimmage. Hawthorne passed away on July 8, 2026, at the age of 69. His family announced his death via social media, requesting prayers for his loved ones.
