Particulars
Gerd Nauhaus was a German musicologist who devoted his career to the scholarly study of Robert and Clara Schumann. Born in Erfurt, he studied music education, musicology and German philology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg and worked as a music dramaturge in Zwickau before joining the Robert Schumann House, the world's largest Schumann archive, museum and research centre. He served as its scientific staff member, archive director and deputy director, and from 1993 to 2005 as its director. His meticulous critical editions of Robert Schumann's diaries and household books, completed under the restrictive conditions of the GDR, set new standards for documentary Schumann research, and he later co-edited the couple's marriage diaries and Clara Schumann's youth diaries. He also served as artistic director of the International Robert Schumann Competitions in Zwickau, chaired the Robert Schumann Society and was honoured with the Robert Schumann Prize of the city of Zwickau.
