Geraldine de Haas began her career as a vocalist in the 1950s, performing with several notable big bands and earning acclaim for her rich, expressive voice. In the 1970s she shifted focus to nurturing the local jazz community, organizing festivals, concert series, and educational workshops that drew both emerging talent and established artists to Chicago. Her efforts were credited with sparking a revival of the city's jazz culture, earning her the nickname “First Lady of Chicago Jazz.”

Beyond performance, de Haas served as a mentor and advocate for younger musicians, helping to secure venues and funding for jazz programs throughout the Midwest. She continued to be an active presence in the scene well into her later years, receiving numerous honors for her contributions to American music. Geraldine de Haas passed away at the age of 91, leaving a lasting legacy in the Chicago jazz community.
