George J. Cotliar was a distinguished journalist and editor best known for his nearly two-decade tenure as managing editor of the Los Angeles Times. Born in the Bronx in 1932 to Russian immigrant parents, Cotliar moved to Los Angeles as a child and pursued journalism studies at Cal State Los Angeles. He began his career at local newspapers before joining the Los Angeles Times, where he worked in various roles including reporter, copy editor, and suburban editor, steadily rising through the ranks. In 1985, he achieved his long-held goal of becoming the paper's managing editor. Under his leadership, the Times earned 10 Pulitzer Prizes and gained national acclaim for its rigorous reporting and presentation. Known for his sharp mind, passionate temperament, and deep commitment to journalistic integrity, Cotliar was respected for his deep knowledge of Los Angeles and dedication to daily excellence. He was married to Pearl Ruth Gottlieb for over 50 years until her death in 2011, and is survived by his children and grandchildren.
