Historical departure

Particulars

George Halas was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Czech‑Bohemian immigrants Barbara (Poledna) and Frank Halas, and he was the brother of Walter Halas.

In 1915 Halas worked temporarily for Western Electric and planned to board the SS Eastland; he was running late while trying to gain weight to play Big Ten football and therefore missed the capsizing that killed 844 passengers.
