Historical departure

Particulars

In 1889, Frank Leslie shot and killed Mollie Edwards, a woman living with him at his ranch in Arizona, in a drunken fit of jealousy. He was sentenced to life in prison but was pardoned in 1896 after serving six years. His earlier life in Tombstone had already made him notorious: he had killed two men in self-defense, and eight days after killing one of them, he married the victim's widow.

Leslie arrived in Tombstone in 1880, dressed in buckskin and quickly becoming known as 'Buckskin Frank.' He opened the Cosmopolitan Saloon and was involved in several violent incidents. In 1880, he shot and killed Mike Killeen, who had attacked him after suspecting Leslie of an affair with his wife. Leslie married Killeen's widow, Mary, eight days later. In 1882, he killed Billy Claiborne in another self-defense shooting, after Claiborne threatened him and fired first.

After his divorce from Mary in 1887, Leslie's life took a darker turn. He killed Mollie Edwards in 1889, claiming she was his wife, and was convicted of first-degree murder. While in prison, he became a model prisoner and worked as a pharmacist in the infirmary. After his pardon, he moved to California, married Belle Stowell, and later filed a homestead claim in Washington, but the claim was canceled. He was last recorded in the 1920 census in Sausalito, California, and his death date is unknown.
