Historical departure

Particulars

Frank Lentini was born in Rosolini, Sicily, in 1889 with a parasitic twin attached at the base of his spine. The undeveloped twin included a pelvic bone, rudimentary male genitalia, and a fully formed third leg extending from his right hip, with a small foot projecting from its knee. At four months old, a specialist in Naples deemed surgical removal too dangerous due to the risk of paralysis. By age five, Lentini could bend and straighten the extra limb, though it could not support his weight for walking.

When he was eight, a travelling puppet show operator named Magnano brought him to the United States, and his family followed. Lentini entered the sideshow business as 'The Great Lentini,' performing with Ringling Brothers Circus, Barnum and Bailey, and Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. In his youth, he kicked a soccer ball across the stage with his third leg, earning the stage name 'Three-Legged Football Player.' His career spanned more than 40 years, and he was so respected among peers that he was often called 'The King.'

At age 18, Lentini married Theresa Murray in 1907; the couple had four children before separating around 1935. He then lived with Helen Eleanor Shupe for the remainder of his life. Lentini died of lung failure in Jackson, Tennessee, on 21 September 1966, at age 77. His legacy includes a portrayal in the 2017 film The Greatest Showman and a feature on the back cover of Alice in Chains' 1995 self-titled album.
