Franco Baresi was born on 8 May 1960 in Travagliato, Italy. He joined AC Milan's youth system at age 14 and spent his entire 20-year professional career with the club, becoming its captain for 15 seasons. Initially considered too small and frail for top-level football, he developed into one of the sport's most elegant and reliable defenders, earning the nickname "Kaiser Franz" in reference to Franz Beckenbauer.

With AC Milan, Baresi won three European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles, six Serie A championships, four Supercoppa Italiana titles, two European Super Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups. He made 719 appearances for the club, the second-most in its history. After his retirement in 1997, AC Milan retired his number 6 shirt in his honor, and he was voted the club's Player of the Century in 1999.

For the Italy national team, Baresi was part of the squad that won the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He captained Italy at the 1994 World Cup, where they reached the final. He was named in the FIFA World Cup All-Star Team in 1990 and was selected by Pelé as one of the 125 Greatest Living Footballers in 2004. Baresi was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
