Francis James Wylie wrote a personal letter to every past Rhodes scholar timed to arrive on the scholar's birthday, hand‑writing up to 2,000 such letters a year. After his death, his wife, Lady Wylie, continued this practice.

For a pre‑Great War Rhodes scholar from Germany who later emigrated to Africa, the letter was a memorable feature of family life and led the next generation of Popps to become good friends with later generations of Wylies.
