Lott made her professional debut in 1974 and gained breakthrough recognition in 1975 when she stepped in as Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute at the English National Opera. Over a four‑decade career she performed at leading opera houses and concert halls worldwide, becoming renowned for roles such as the Marschallin in Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, the Countess in Capriccio, and for her expressive French mélodies and English song recitals.

She received numerous honours, including a DBE in 1996, the French Légion d'Honneur, and the title of Bayerische Kammersängerin. Lott was a frequent presence at the BBC Proms, a founding member of the Songmakers' Almanac, and served as a patron of several music festivals and organisations.
