Fabio Mussi was an Italian politician who rose through the ranks of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), joining its Central Committee in 1979 and serving as regional secretary in Calabria before entering the party's national directorate. He was co-editor of the newspaper L'Unità and vice-director of Rinascita, playing a significant role in the cultural and political life of the Italian left.

Elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in 1992, he served as a parliamentarian until 2008, holding roles including group leader of the PDS-Ulivo deputies and vice-president of the Chamber. He served as Minister of University and Research in the second Prodi government.

A leading figure of the left-wing minority within the Democrats of the Left, Mussi opposed the party's merger into the Democratic Party in 2007, founding the Democratic Left party instead. He later contributed to the creation of Left Ecology Freedom (SEL) and then Italian Left (Sinistra Italiana), remaining an active and respected figure in Italian left politics until his death.
