Eugène Bataillon
1864–1953Eugène Bataillon produced normal parthenogenetic Rana temporaria larvae in 1910.
Particulars
Eugène Bataillon joined the faculty as a lecturer in zoology at Lyon, moved to Dijon the next year, and in 1903 became the first professor of general biology. He discovered traumatic parthenogenesis in amphibians, injecting fluids into the eggs of amphibians and fishes, which activated cleavage but early embryos aborted.
He claimed osmotic pressure triggered the effect and later found that puncturing the eggs with platinum stylets reduced the pressure. He produced normal parthenogenetic larvae of Rana temporaria in 1910. One of his students was Chinese biologist Zhu Xi.
