Ernst von Fleischl-Marxow

1846–1891

Ernst von Fleischl‑Marxow proved sensory stimulation produced small electrical potentials on the cerebral cortex but kept the results sealed until 1883.

Historical departure

Particulars

From 1876 Ernst von Fleischl‑Marxow investigated the global electrical activity of the cerebral hemispheres and demonstrated that peripheral stimulation of vision and hearing generated event‑related small electrical potential swings on the surface of the cerebral cortex.

He did not publish these findings, instead depositing them in a bank safe with instructions that they be revealed in 1883, while later independent work by Richard Caton and Adolf Beck reported similar observations.
