Emma Bonino was a prominent Italian politician and a longtime leading figure of the Italian Radical Party. She was elected to the Italian Parliament and the European Parliament, and served as a European Commissioner for Consumer Policy and Fisheries, as well as Italy's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister for European Affairs.

A lifelong campaigner for civil liberties, human rights, and social justice, Bonino championed causes including abortion rights, divorce law, drug-policy reform, and international humanitarian intervention. She was repeatedly recognized for her public activism and remained one of Italy's most internationally respected progressive political voices until her death.
