Elliot Philipp
1915–2010A gynaecologist who helped develop in-vitro fertilisation with Steptoe and Edwards, and wrote The Technique of Sex with Sigmund Freud's assistance.
Particulars
Elliot Elias Philipp, a British gynaecologist and obstetrician, was part of the team that helped develop in-vitro fertilisation alongside Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards. He also authored The Technique of Sex (1939), a book written with the assistance of Sigmund Freud, which reflected his early engagement with sexual science before his medical career took shape.
Born on 20 July 1915 in Stoke Newington, London, to a Jewish family, Philipp was the son of Clarisse (née Weil) and Oscar Philipp. His father, a cousin to Martha Bernays (Freud's wife), had immigrated from Hamburg in 1908 to establish the metal trading firm Philipp Brothers. This family connection likely facilitated Freud's involvement in Philipp's early writing.
Philipp retired from the National Health Service in 1980 but continued to see private patients in Harley Street and operated until the age of 77. He married Lucie Ruth Hackenbroch in 1939; the couple had two children, Ann Susan (1941–1997) and Alan Henry. He died on 27 September 2010, at the age of 95.
