Eight Finger Phước

1972–1996

Eight Finger Phước escaped from prison by tunneling, climbing, and deceiving a guard on 27 March 1995.

Historical departure

Particulars

At 9 p.m. on 26 March 1995, Phước removed his shackles, crawled into the toilet and used an iron awl to make a hole large enough to squeeze through. He flushed the sand and cement chips, carried bricks to his sleeping area and arranged them to resemble a lying person, then climbed onto the roof and tied his prisoner clothes into a rope to descend, but the rope broke and he fell face‑down, losing consciousness.

After regaining consciousness, Phước climbed a nearby electric pole, reached the guards' housing complex, hid until dawn, took a drying police uniform, a bicycle and sandals, wheeled the bicycle to the guard post and asked the on‑duty officer to open the gate so he could “go out for coffee”; the officer opened the gate, completing Phước's escape.
