Edward Whitehead Reid
1883–1930Edward Whitehead Reid bought two rebuilt Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a aircraft.
Particulars
Edward Whitehead Reid said that after WWI many S.E.5as were sold for spares because policy barred their sale as functional aircraft. A factory worker anonymously bid for five at auction for £5, dismantled them, removed them from a scrapheap, reassembled them to flying condition and sold them for £30 each.
According to Whitehead Reid, two of the reassembled S.E.5as were purchased by him and two were sold to a skywriting company.
