Eberhard Vogel was a German footballer and manager who became one of the defining figures of East German football. Nicknamed "Matz", he played as a left winger for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and FC Carl Zeiss Jena between 1961 and 1982, amassing 440 appearances in the DDR-Oberliga, the all-time record for the league. He scored 188 top-flight goals, second only to Joachim Streich, and was named East German Footballer of the Year in 1969.

Vogel won the DDR championship with Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1967 and the FDGB-Pokal with Jena in 1972, 1974 and 1980. He also reached the 1981 European Cup Winners' Cup final with Jena at the age of 38. Internationally, he earned 74 caps for the East Germany national team, scored 35 goals across various representative sides, and won Olympic bronze medals in 1964 and 1972.

After retiring, Vogel became a successful coach. He led the East German youth teams to the 1986 European Under-18 title and later managed Hannover 96, Carl Zeiss Jena, the Togo national team, and 1. FC Magdeburg, where he guided the club to a memorable DFB-Pokal run in 2000/01 that eliminated several Bundesliga sides.
