Douglas McCain was born in the early 1960s and was adopted by John McCain after his marriage to Carol Shepp in 1965. He grew up in the public eye as the son of the future Senate hero, later becoming a step‑brother to Cindy McCain after John McCain’s remarriage. He served six years in the U.S. Navy, flying A‑6 Intruder attack aircraft, before transitioning to a civilian career as a pilot for American Airlines, where he logged thousands of flight hours and was known for his professionalism and friendly demeanor. Beyond his aviation work, McCain was a devoted family man, married to Ashley and father to Caroline and Douglas. He remained close to his sister Meghan, who publicly mourned his sudden passing. McCain died unexpectedly on May 20, 2026, at the age of 66. He is survived by his wife, children, mother Carol Shepp, and numerous siblings and step‑siblings, and was remembered as a patriot and friend to many associated with the McCain Institute.
