Don Nelson (May 15, 1940 – August 9, 2026) was a prominent figure in professional basketball, known both for his playing career and his innovative coaching style. He played in the NBA from 1963 to 1976, spending most of his playing years with the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks, and won two championships as a player.

After retiring as a player, Nelson embarked on a coaching career that spanned more than three decades. He served as head coach for several teams, including the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks, and was celebrated for his creative offensive schemes. He amassed 1,335 regular‑season wins, ranking among the most successful coaches in league history, and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.

Nelson’s influence extended beyond wins and losses; he mentored numerous players and coaches who later became prominent in the sport. His contributions to basketball strategy and his longevity in the NBA earned him widespread respect across the basketball community. He passed away peacefully at the age of 86, surrounded by his family.
