Dermot John Murnaghan was born on 26 December 1957 in Barnstaple, Devon, and grew up in Northern Ireland. He studied history at the University of Sussex and completed postgraduate training in journalism at City University London. He worked for Channel 4, ITV, and the BBC, becoming one of the main presenters of BBC Breakfast from 2002 to 2007.
