Particulars

Dennis Hastert was an American politician who served as the 59th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007, the longest tenure of any Republican speaker in history. A former high school teacher and wrestling coach from Illinois, he was first elected to the House in 1986 and rose through Republican leadership, becoming Speaker after the resignation of Newt Gingrich. During his speakership he oversaw major legislation including the USA PATRIOT Act and the No Child Left Behind Act, and steered the House through the September 11 attacks and the Iraq War.

In his later years Hastert's legacy was overshadowed by scandal. In 2015 he was indicted on federal charges of bank structuring and lying to the FBI in connection with hush-money payments made to conceal misconduct, and he later admitted to sexually abusing boys while a wrestling coach decades earlier. He pleaded guilty and served time in federal prison, becoming the highest-ranking U.S. official ever to serve jail time. Hastert died at age 84.
