Dame Penelope Keith, born Penelope Anne Constance Hatfield on 2 April 1940, in Sutton, Surrey, was one of Britain's most beloved actresses. Her early life was shaped by a transient childhood and a strong passion for the arts, fostered by her mother. After being rejected by the Central School of Speech and Drama for her height, she trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. She began her career in repertory theatre and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963.
Keith's television breakthrough came with the BBC sitcom The Good Life (1975–78), where she played the iconic role of Margo Leadbetter. Her performance earned her a BAFTA for Best Light Entertainment Performance in 1977. She further cemented her television legacy with the lead role of Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in To the Manor Born (1979–81), a show that attracted audiences of over 20 million. Her other notable television credits include Executive Stress, No Job for a Lady, and Next of Kin.
On stage, Keith performed in a wide range of classical and contemporary plays, including Blithe Spirit and The Importance of Being Earnest. She also had a prolific career in radio, narrating BBC adaptations and dramas. Her voice work extended to commercials, most memorably for Parker Pen.
In addition to her entertainment career, Keith was deeply involved in charitable and public service roles. She served as High Sheriff of Surrey in 2002 and was President of the Actors' Benevolent Fund from 1990 to 2022.
