Particulars
Craig Douglas, born Terence Perkins in Newport, Isle of Wight, was a British rock and roll and pop singer who rose to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He worked as a milkman before turning professional, earning the nickname the 'Singing Milkman'. His manager Bunny Lewis gave him the stage name Craig Douglas after seeing the name outside a house in Scotland.
Douglas was voted Best New Singer by NME in 1959 and recorded eight cover versions of American hits, with his version of "Only Sixteen" reaching number one in the UK and outselling Sam Cooke's original. He recorded at Abbey Road Studios and had four consecutive number nine placings on the UK singles chart. He also starred in the 1962 film It's Trad, Dad! and topped the bill on the Beatles' first major stage show.
After his chart career ended in the early 1960s, Douglas continued performing at night clubs and on cruise ships, touring the UK until 2010. He released a 2011 album, The Craig Douglas Project, and remained a beloved figure in British pop music history until his death at age 85.
